In the early morning hours of February 25, 2015, a dispute in a North Memphis apartment escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of Antonio Grandberry. An African American male, Grandberry was 32 years old at the time of his death. The incident unfolded inside an apartment located in the 2500 block of Goodwill Lane, where an argument between Grandberry and another man turned fatal.
According to a witness at the scene, the altercation began with a verbal disagreement between
Grandberry and 21-year-old Ladarious Effinger. The situation quickly intensified when Effinger allegedly fired a single gunshot before stepping outside the apartment. Moments later, he returned and fired four additional shots that struck Grandberry. Following the shooting, Effinger is accused of taking Grandberry's gun and drugs before fleeing the scene.
Memphis Police officers were dispatched to the apartment at approximately 2:45 a.m., where they discovered Grandberry on the floor, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Paramedics with the Memphis Fire Department were called to the location and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Based on the witness's account, law enforcement quickly identified Effinger as the primary suspect. Officers broadcasted a description, and Effinger was soon located and detained in the vicinity along with another man, who was later released without charge. During questioning, Effinger reportedly admitted to police that he had shot Grandberry and stolen his weapon. He was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and first-degree murder in perpetration of a robbery. Effinger was held at the Shelby County Jail pending his initial court appearance.
