On the evening of January 10, 2017, the Kansas City, Missouri police force responded to a reported shooting at the intersection of 12th Street and The Paseo. Officers arrived at the scene around 8:45 p.m., where they discovered a black vehicle stopped in the street facing northbound. The car’s engine was still running, and the passenger-side door was standing open, suggesting a hasty departure by at least one occupant.
Inside the vehicle, authorities found 20-year-old male Donald E. Coty Jr. in the driver's seat, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical personnel attempted to administer first aid, but the injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. This incident marked the city's first recorded homicide of the year.
Investigation into the shooting revealed that another individual had likely been in the car with the victim at the time of the attack. Police believed this second occupant may have also been wounded before fleeing the scene on foot. Despite the recovery of the vehicle and the evidence gathered at the location, no suspects were immediately taken into custody. The case was subsequently listed among the department's unsolved homicides, with detectives appealing to the public for any information regarding the events that led to the fatal encounter.
