In the early morning hours of October 25, 2015, a knock at the door of her South Nashville home on Hopewood Court forever altered the lives of Olympia Hobbs's family. The 33-year-old woman was fatally shot as she went to answer the door at approximately 2 a.m. Her two children, ages 13 and 5, were inside the residence at the time but were unharmed.
Emergency services transported Hobbs to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The investigation into the senseless killing led Metro Nashville police to two individuals, Javier Alexander Rivas and Hayden S. Fryer. Detectives were able to connect the shooting of Hobbs to another shooting incident that had occurred just two hours earlier about four miles away on Lutie Street, using video surveillance footage. This evidence proved crucial in identifying Rivas and Fryer as the suspects in both violent crimes.
In May 2016, a Davidson County Grand Jury indicted both Rivas and Fryer on multiple charges, including first-degree felony murder and first-degree premeditated murder for the death of Olympia Hobbs. Following a trial, a jury convicted both men on these charges, in addition to other offenses related to the earlier shooting. For their roles in the murder of Olympia Hobbs and the preceding events of that night, both Javier Alexander Rivas and Hayden S. Fryer received a total effective sentence of life in prison plus fifty-two years.
