In the days following Christmas of 2015, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in Memphis, Tennessee, culminating in the death of 26-year-old Lakeyel Hurd. On December 29th, Hurd was temporarily residing with a friend in an apartment in the Hickory Ridge area. Her ex-boyfriend, Antonio R. Davis, appeared at the residence, forcing his way inside by shooting through a sliding glass door.
The initial shot struck Hurd in the abdomen.
As Hurd's friend attempted to render aid to her, Davis stood over both women. He threatened to shoot the friend unless she disclosed who Hurd had been seeing. In a fit of rage, Davis then shot Hurd several more times, including three times in the head, which resulted in her death. His violent spree did not end there. The friend fled to a bedroom to shield her four children, but Davis followed, pointing his firearm at her and the one-year-old child she held in her arms. Before leaving the apartment, Davis stole the friend's cell phone to prevent her from calling the police.
Following the murder, Antonio Davis fled the scene. An investigation was launched, and approximately two weeks later, U.S. Marshals located and apprehended him at a motel in Goodlettsville, a town just north of Nashville. Davis was extradited back to Memphis to face charges for his crimes.
In December 2021, a Shelby County jury found Antonio R. Davis, then 33, guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, and aggravated burglary. For the murder of Lakeyel Hurd, he received an automatic life sentence. The court proceedings revealed the terrifying details of the domestic violence incident that led to Hurd's untimely death and endangered the lives of her friend and four young children.
