In the fall of 2017, a Memphis family was shattered by the tragic death of one-year-old Robin Keefer. The young female child, described by her great-aunt as a good baby who was often laughing, died on November 10, 2017, from a gunshot wound. The incident occurred on a Friday morning at an apartment in the Fox Meadows neighborhood of Memphis.
The events leading to the fatal shooting began when 25-year-old Shawn Moore visited the apartment of his daughter's mother.
After helping to put the infant to sleep, Moore allegedly left a handgun on the bed where the child was resting. He then left the room. Shortly after, family members heard a gunshot and discovered that Robin had been shot. Investigators later determined that the one-year-old was accidentally shot by her three-year-old sibling who had found the firearm.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, witnesses reported that Moore grabbed the gun and fled from the apartment. He later turned himself in to the police on the evening of the incident. Robin was rushed to LeBonheur Children's Hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.
Shawn Moore was subsequently arrested and booked into the Shelby County Jail. He was charged with criminally negligent homicide, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and tampering with evidence. His bond was set at $50,000, and he was arraigned the following Monday. The tragic death of young Robin Keefer served as a grim reminder of the dangers of unsecured firearms in a home with children.
