In the early morning hours of Labor Day, September 5, 2016, a party at a home on Pinewood Drive in Chattanooga, Tennessee, turned into a scene of tragedy. Rashaud Taylor, a 23-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in a violent outburst that also claimed the life of 22-year-old Jasmine Hines and left another woman, Zirrshaddia Scott, seriously injured.
The incident cut short the life of a young man known to his loved ones and community.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Chattanooga police quickly identified Stephen Mobley, also known as 'Dollar,' as the suspect. A few days later, Mobley turned himself in to the authorities and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Taylor and Hines. The investigation suggested that the tragic events unfolded after Mobley felt offended by Scott and the other victims.
Stephen Mobley's case proceeded to trial, where harrowing testimony from the surviving victim, Zirrshaddia Scott, painted a grim picture of the events that transpired that night. The prosecution built a case arguing that Mobley was the individual responsible for the senseless loss of two young lives. Despite the defense's arguments attempting to cast doubt on whether Mobley was the one who pulled the trigger, the jury was convinced of his guilt. Mobley was ultimately convicted of the murders and sentenced for his crimes. The community mourned the loss of Rashaud Taylor, with his funeral held on September 12, 2016, and his interment at Highland Cemetery in Chattanooga.
