In the fall of 2016, the life of a young man, Brelyn Cherry, a 21-year-old Black / African American male, was tragically cut short. On the evening of October 7, 2016, in Savannah, Tennessee, a fatal encounter unfolded that would ultimately lead to a conviction in his death.
The incident that claimed Brelyn Cherry's life was a shooting. In the aftermath of the event, an investigation was launched to bring clarity and justice for the young man's untimely death. The inquiries and legal proceedings that followed would span over two years, culminating in a jury trial in Hardin County Circuit Court.
The trial, held in March of 2019, concluded with a guilty verdict for the man responsible for Brelyn Cherry's death. Carlos Dewartherdo Ferguson was convicted of second-degree murder. The two-day trial brought to a close the search for accountability in the fatal shooting, officially resolving the case with Ferguson's conviction.
