In the quiet early morning hours of February 3, 2018, a dark plan was set into motion that would end the lives of two Memphis teenagers. Nineteen-year-old Jereme Jones, a male, and his friend, Devonte Taylor, also 19, had arranged to meet with individuals they believed were interested in purchasing two rifles they had for sale. The meeting, however, was a setup orchestrated by members of the Piru Bloods gang with the sole intention of robbing the two young men of their firearms.
The encounter turned deadly, and both Jones and Taylor were shot multiple times with two different caliber weapons, their lives tragically cut short.
Later that morning, around 9:45 a.m., visitors to Fletcher Creek Park in the Cordova neighborhood of Memphis stumbled upon a grim scene. Inside a parked car, they discovered the bodies of Jereme Jones and Devonte Taylor in the front seat. The discovery launched a homicide investigation by the Memphis Police Department. The initial shock and grief of the community soon turned to a desire for justice as authorities began to piece together the events that led to the brutal killings.
The investigation into the double homicide eventually led to the identification of several suspects. Among them was Juanyai Walls, a known member of the Piru Bloods gang. In July 2022, Walls was convicted by a Criminal Court jury on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated robbery. For the murder convictions, he automatically received two life sentences. Another co-defendant in the case, Kentrell Spight, reached a plea agreement and was sentenced to 35 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Two other individuals were also charged in connection with the murders and were awaiting trial.
