In the late summer evening of August 6, 2018, the life of James Matthew 'Matt' Poynter, a 38-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. A professional landscaper known for his quick wit and love of baseball, Poynter was discovered in the driver's seat of a vehicle parked in the driveway of a residence on East Street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Murfreesboro Police officers responded to a 'shots fired' call in the area around 9:00 PM.
Upon their arrival, they found Poynter grievously wounded. Emergency medical services were rendered at the scene, and he was quickly transported to St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival.
The Murfreesboro Police Department promptly launched a homicide investigation into Poynter's death. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood and appealed to the public for any information that might lead to the identification of a suspect or suspects. At the time of the initial reports, authorities had not released any information regarding a potential motive or any persons of interest.
