In the late hours of a September night in Covington, Tennessee, the life of 18-year-old Isaiah McCrory was tragically cut short. On September 11, 2018, McCrory, a male, was in a field at the intersection of Leighs Chapel Road and Turner Field Road when gunfire erupted shortly after 1:00 a.m. Deputies from the Tipton County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting around 1:45 a.m. and discovered a grim scene. McCrory and another 18-year-old, Christavian Toomes, were found deceased, both having sustained apparent gunshot wounds. A third individual was also wounded in the incident and was transported to a hospital in Memphis for medical attention.

The investigation into the double homicide was swiftly taken up by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, at the request of 25th District Attorney General Mark Davidson. Their inquiries led them to identify a person of interest who was reportedly present at the scene during the fatal shooting. This individual was identified as Jarvis Tyleye Grant.

Within a day of the incident, on September 12, 2018, Jarvis Tyleye Grant was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with one count of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and one count of Tampering with or Fabricating Evidence.
