In the small town of Middleton, Tennessee, the life of Deon Edward Turner, a 31-year-old African American man, was violently cut short on March 22, 2019. The tragic event unfolded during what appeared to be a home invasion at a residence on Britts Chapel Lane. In the chaos of that day, not only was Turner killed, but a woman at the home was also seriously injured in the shooting.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, in conjunction with the Hardeman County Sheriff's Department, launched
a homicide investigation into Turner's death. Their efforts quickly led to the identification of five individuals believed to be responsible for the brutal crime. Just a few days after the incident, authorities arrested Kaci Bercham, who was 19 at the time; Terry Martindale, 20; Michael Mayfield, 19; Betty Sparks, 45; and her son, Steven Sparks, who was 23.
The five suspects faced a litany of serious charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and especially aggravated burglary. Following their arrests, they were all held in the Hardeman County Jail without bond. While investigators did not officially release a motive, some speculation arose on social media suggesting the home invasion and subsequent killing may have been connected to a dispute over money and drugs. One post alleged that the suspects targeted Turner because he had not fulfilled a promise to help Betty Sparks get her son, Steven, out of jail.
Deon Turner was remembered by those who knew him as a loving father to his three young children and a good friend with a penchant for jokes. He had attended Middleton High School and worked at various factories after his graduation. His death left a void in the lives of his family and friends, who mourned the sudden and violent loss of a man described as having a big heart and a constant smile.
