On a cold Saturday evening in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 21-year-old Cedric Birdsong Jr. was tragically cut short. On January 9, 2021, the young man was fatally shot at a Raines Mart gas station located in the 5900 block of East Raines Road in the Hickory Hill neighborhood. The incident unfolded at approximately 6:20 p.m. after Birdsong had gone inside the convenience store and was returning to his vehicle.
As he attempted to get into his car, he was confronted by an unknown male
assailant. Moments later, the suspect opened fire, shooting Birdsong multiple times. He fell to the pavement as the shooter fled the scene, reportedly running behind the business. Paramedics from the Memphis Fire Department arrived to find Birdsong on the ground with several gunshot wounds and pronounced him dead at the scene.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Memphis Police Department began their investigation but did not have any suspect information to release to the public. Later, authorities described the person of interest as a male, approximately six feet tall and weighing around 150 pounds. He was reportedly wearing dark clothing, a face covering, and a white hat at the time of the incident.
To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made in connection with the murder of Cedric Birdsong Jr. The case remains an open homicide investigation, and law enforcement has continued to seek information from the public to help identify the individual responsible for his death. In the years following the shooting, no suspects have been officially named or taken into custody.
