In Memphis, Tennessee, the year 2019 was marked by the separate and tragic deaths of two men, both named Marcus Brooks. The first of these incidents occurred on the evening of April 25th. This Marcus Brooks, a 39-year-old Black male, was known to use a wheelchair. On that Thursday evening, he was in the 2300 block of Pendleton Street when gunfire erupted. When police and paramedics arrived, they found him with critical injuries.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, he did not survive. The community was left shaken by the violent death of a man who was already navigating the world with a physical disability. In the days and weeks that followed, the Memphis Police Department investigated the homicide, but information about a possible suspect or a motive for the shooting was not released to the public. As time passed, the case grew cold, and despite the efforts of law enforcement, no arrests have been announced in connection with his murder, leaving his family and friends to grapple with the unanswered questions surrounding his untimely death.
Just a few months later, on September 18, 2019, another Memphis man named Marcus Brooks, this one a 29-year-old Black male, also fell victim to gun violence in what police have described as a double homicide. This shooting took place in the Orange Mound neighborhood. Brooks was with another man, 28-year-old Marqual Rivers, when they were both fatally shot. According to reports from the scene, the two men were standing in a common area of an apartment complex when at least one vehicle, and possibly a second, drove by and opened fire. The sudden and brutal nature of the attack left little chance for survival. Both Brooks and Rivers were pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the deaths of Marcus Brooks and Marqual Rivers pointed to a drive-by shooting. Authorities released descriptions of two vehicles of interest: a white Chrysler 200 and a black Infinity. Despite this information and appeals to the public for assistance, the investigation has been met with challenges. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the years following the double homicide. The case remains an open and active investigation, a painful reminder of a violent night in Orange Mound that claimed the lives of two young men. The lack of resolution in both of these cases has left a void in the lives of their families and the Memphis community, who continue to await justice for the two men named Marcus Brooks.
