In a tragic turn of events on a late June morning in Jackson, Tennessee, 18-year-old Isaiah Day, a male resident of the city, lost his life. The incident unfolded in the parking lot of a business in the 2000 block of Hollywood. Day was a passenger in a stolen car being driven by 35-year-old Eugene Richmond of Memphis. As Day was getting out of the vehicle, Richmond shot him. Emergency services transported Day to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed a tumultuous morning leading up to the fatal shooting. Richmond had reportedly stolen the vehicle in Memphis around 7 a.m. on the same day. Investigators do not believe Day was involved in the initial car theft. After shooting Day around 9:20 a.m., Richmond fled the scene, heading north on Hollywood in the stolen car. Law enforcement later found the abandoned vehicle at a rest area off Interstate 40 in Madison County.
Richmond's crime spree did not end there. Around 10:40 a.m., he stole a second car from the parking lot of a business on the 2300 block of North Highland Avenue. His run from the law came to an end around 1 p.m. when police were called to a report of an armed man attempting to steal yet another car at a furniture store on Commerce Center Circle. Employees at the business had confronted Richmond, and upon their arrival, police took him into custody. He was found to be in possession of a handgun, and the second stolen vehicle was recovered at the scene.
Eugene Richmond, who has a lengthy criminal history including convictions for aggravated assault, voluntary manslaughter, and multiple auto burglaries, was taken into custody at the Madison County Jail. He was expected to face murder charges, as well as charges related to the car thefts. While the motive for the homicide was still under investigation, authorities were working to determine why Richmond was in Jackson. He was anticipated to make his first court appearance in Jackson City Court.
