In the autumn of 2019, the community of Cleveland, Tennessee, was shaken by a grim discovery that would unravel a story of anger and violence. On September 23, the body of 38-year-old James 'Pocket' Ledford, a White/Caucasian male, was found in a wooden chest in the back of a pickup truck at Fort Hill Cemetery. An investigation revealed he had been fatally shot in the chest, indicating a targeted act rather than a random incident.
The investigation into Ledford's death quickly gained
momentum, leading authorities to two suspects: Christopher Mardrie Roberson and Alfonzo Montell Johnson. The motive behind the killing appeared to stem from Roberson's fury over a stolen motorcycle. He had allegedly made threats to kill the person responsible. As the investigation deepened, it became more complex, connecting Ledford's death to that of another individual, Jaclyn Carroll, who was found deceased shortly after Ledford.
In October 2019, both Roberson and Johnson were charged with the homicides of James Ledford and Jaclyn Carroll. Roberson was apprehended in Chattanooga and transported back to Cleveland to face the charges. Johnson was already in custody on an unrelated matter at the time the charges were brought against him. The case against the two men was built through numerous interviews and the collection of evidence by the Cleveland Police Department and other collaborating agencies.
The legal process moved forward, and in February 2023, Alfonzo Montell Johnson was sentenced to 90 years in prison for his role in the murders. The thoroughness of the investigation was praised as a key factor in securing the conviction, bringing a measure of justice for the families of James Ledford and Jaclyn Carroll.
