In the quiet town of Niota, Tennessee, a domestic disturbance shattered the autumn calm on October 25, 2019, culminating in the tragic death of 55-year-old Dawn Branson. The events unfolded at a residence on County Road 288, where deputies from the McMinn County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a volatile situation that also involved several fires on the property.
Upon their arrival around 4:30 p.m., law enforcement officers were met with a perilous scene.
Inside the home, 59-year-old Roger Branson had barricaded himself and was holding his wife, Dawn, hostage. As deputies attempted to establish communication and de-escalate the situation, the suspect was uncooperative. The situation took a devastating turn when Dawn made an attempt to flee the residence, and her husband shot her.
The confrontation escalated further when Roger Branson, armed with a handgun, began shooting at the deputies from within the burning home. In the exchange of gunfire that followed, deputies struck the suspect. After taking Roger Branson into custody, authorities discovered Dawn Branson deceased inside the residence.
Roger Branson was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and was set to face criminal charges in connection with his wife's death and the other events that transpired. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the inquiry into the officer-involved shooting, a standard procedure for such cases.
