In the early morning hours of October 27, 2019, a domestic dispute in Nashville, Tennessee, tragically cut short the life of 23-year-old Kaylin Smith. An argument between Smith and her girlfriend, 24-year-old Keriesha Majors, escalated into a physical altercation while they were visiting an apartment at the Overlook Ridge Apartments on Buena Vista Pike. The confrontation moved into a breezeway of the apartment complex where Smith was fatally shot.
Following the shooting, Majors fled the scene but later surrendered to authorities downtown. She was arrested and charged with criminal homicide for the death of her girlfriend. The investigation into the incident revealed that the two women had been in a relationship and were at a cousin's apartment when the deadly argument ensued. Majors was subsequently held on a $600,000 bond.
On March 10, 2020, a Davidson County grand jury indicted Majors on a charge of premeditated first-degree murder for Smith's death. While out on bond in October 2021, Majors was arrested again during a traffic stop on unrelated charges, including theft of a firearm. Her trial for the murder of Kaylin Smith commenced on January 30, 2022.
A jury ultimately found Keriesha Majors guilty of second-degree murder. She was sentenced to twenty-five years in prison for the crime. Majors later appealed her conviction, challenging the sufficiency of the evidence, the admission of a Facebook Live recording she made shortly after the murder, and the length of her sentence. However, the appellate court affirmed the trial court's judgment, upholding her conviction and sentence.
