In the winter of 2019, a tragic event unfolded in Brownsville, Tennessee, that claimed the life of 24-year-old Alexis Branch and her unborn child. On the night of December 1st, gunshots shattered the peace at a home on Tammbell Street. When authorities arrived, they found a devastating scene. Alexis Branch, who was eight months pregnant, was pronounced dead at the scene, along with her unborn baby. The violence also left a lasting impact on her family. Her 8-year-old daughter was critically wounded, suffering from paralysis over much of her body, and another adult family member sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the deadly shooting was a collaborative effort between the Brownsville Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Investigators released surveillance images of a man they wanted to question in connection with the shooting. The plea for public assistance was a crucial step in piecing together the events of that tragic night. Family members remembered Alexis as a loving and kind-spirited person who was excitedly preparing for her baby shower, which was scheduled for just a couple of weeks after she was killed.
Weeks after the shooting, a breakthrough in the case came with the arrest of a teenage suspect. On December 27th, warrants were secured for the arrest of Jamal Voss. He was apprehended in Memphis by the Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force. Voss was subsequently charged with two counts of First Degree Murder for the deaths of Alexis Branch and her unborn child, as well as two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder for the injuries sustained by her daughter and another family member. Following his arrest, he was ordered to be held without bond.
