In the small community of Cookeville, Tennessee, a heartbreaking story unfolded in the winter of 2019. Ten-year-old Ian Michael James Austin, a fourth-grade student at Cane Creek Elementary School, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Born on September 25, 2009, to Jamie Austin and Kayla Randolph, Ian was known for his bright smile and friendly, outgoing personality that could light up any room he entered.
The circumstances of young Ian's death were initially unclear, but the
investigation determined that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Putnam County District Attorney confirmed that the shooting appeared to be a suicide. In the wake of this tragedy, Ian's family shared that he had been struggling with bullying and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. They courageously spoke out to raise awareness about mental health issues and suicide prevention among children, hoping that sharing their story could prevent other families from experiencing such a devastating loss.
Because Ian's death was ruled a suicide, there were no arrests made and no suspects were sought in connection with the case. The community rallied around the grieving family, offering support and honoring the memory of a young boy who was gone too soon. Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 12, 2019, at The Edge Facility at Life Church, followed by a graveside service and interment at Judd Cemetery. Ian is survived by his parents and a brother, Braxton Crossman, along with a loving extended family.
