On the evening of January 7, 2020, Patrick Godwin, a 57-year-old male, returned to his home on Horseshoe Bend Lane in Ooltewah, Tennessee, after a day of work as a master hair stylist. As he stood in his own front yard, he was shot and killed in what was quickly determined by the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office not to be a random act of violence. The quiet suburban street was soon filled with the lights of law enforcement as an investigation into the beloved husband and father's death began.
Neighbors reported hearing two gunshots and seeing a dark-colored sedan speeding away from the scene. This information, along with surveillance footage from the area, became crucial in the early stages of the investigation. The focus of the authorities soon turned to Sanel Durakovic, then 25 years old. The motive for the killing appeared to be of a personal nature. Investigators learned that Durakovic's girlfriend worked at the same salon as Godwin. She had reportedly told coworkers that Godwin had made unwanted advances towards her, including an incident the day before his death where he allegedly snapped her with a towel. It is believed that Durakovic followed Godwin home from the salon on the night of the murder and confronted him in his driveway before shooting him twice.
A short time after the homicide, Sanel Durakovic was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on a $200,000 bond. The case, however, would take a tumultuous path through the legal system. In September 2023, the murder charges against Durakovic were unexpectedly dismissed. The dismissal was not a reflection of his innocence but rather a consequence of significant issues with the prosecution's handling of the case. A judge expressed great frustration with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office for delays in turning over crucial evidence to the defense. It was revealed that key video evidence had been lost, and there were substantial delays in providing other materials such as cell phone data, interviews, and body camera footage. This failure to provide discovery in a timely manner was deemed to have compromised Durakovic's right to a fair trial, leading to the dismissal of the charges.

In June 2025, Sanel Durakovic was once again indicted for the first-degree murder of Patrick Godwin and was re-arrested.
