Jermonie Keymonie Vinson, a three-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on the evening of April 23, 2020, in Ooltewah, Tennessee. The incident unfolded at a residence on River Birch Loop Road, where a visit from a family friend took a devastating turn. That evening, Derrick Lamont Ruffin Jr., who was 19 at the time, brought a stolen pistol into the home. He failed to secure the weapon, leaving it accessible.
In a moment of childhood curiosity, Jermonie discovered the firearm. Unaware of its danger, the young boy picked up the gun and it discharged, striking him in the chest. Family members rushed him to a local hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene at approximately 10:40 p.m. to investigate the shooting.
Following an investigation into the tragic event, detectives from the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office arrested Derrick Lamont Ruffin Jr. on April 24, 2020. The investigation concluded that Ruffin's reckless actions directly led to the death of Jermonie. The weapon he brought into the home was also determined to have been stolen. Ruffin was subsequently booked into the Hamilton County Jail.
Derrick Lamont Ruffin Jr. faced multiple charges in connection with Jermonie's death. These charges included reckless homicide, reckless endangerment, unlawful possession of a weapon, and theft under $1,000. The community mourned the loss of the young boy, who was remembered as a bright and beautiful soul. His family held a funeral service to honor his short life, attended by relatives and friends who were left to grapple with the senseless tragedy brought about by negligence and a failure to secure a dangerous weapon.
