In the early hours of a February morning in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 25-year-old Destiny Wilkins was tragically cut short. On February 24, 2020, what began as a planned date with a man she and her friend had met online turned into a scene of brutal violence. Inside a parked car in southeast Shelby County, an argument erupted, and the man, later identified as Darrin Walker, became enraged and opened fire on both women.
Suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, Destiny was forced out
of the vehicle and left in the street. Before succumbing to her injuries at a local hospital, she was able to provide crucial information to sheriff's detectives, identifying Walker as the man who had shot her and her friend, 23-year-old Nayeli 'Courtney' Love. Destiny recounted how Walker then drove off with the still-wounded Nayeli in the back seat.
The abandoned car was discovered approximately two miles away, tragically close to Walker's own home. Inside, authorities found Nayeli Love, who had also been shot multiple times and was deceased. The investigation that followed utilized cellphone data and neighborhood surveillance footage, which ultimately linked Darrin Walker to the heinous crime. About ten days after the shooting, he was apprehended by law enforcement. At the time of the murders, Walker was on diversion probation for a prior kidnapping conviction.
After a five-day trial in August 2022, a jury found Darrin Walker, then 26, guilty on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Destiny Wilkins and Nayeli Love. The conviction carried with it two life sentences. In September of that year, it was determined that he would serve the sentences consecutively.
