On that Monday, 38-year-old Sandy Kay Strickland Willis, a Caucasian female, passed away in her home. Born in Vidalia, Georgia, on October 9, 1981, she was a member of the Pine Hill Baptist Church. Known for her love of horses, butterflies, and arts and crafts, she cherished her family, especially her two sons.
The circumstances of her death, however,
revealed a tragic family dynamic that shattered the peace of their Andy's Ridge Road home. Her then 16-year-old son, Shawn T. Willis, was taken into custody in connection with her death. The investigation revealed that Sandy had been shot while she was sleeping. The alleged motive behind this shocking act was anger over his mother having taken away his cell phone as a form of punishment.
According to court records, Shawn Willis, a junior at Anderson County High School at the time, confessed to the crime weeks after the incident. He admitted to taking his mother's pistol from her nightstand, loading it in another room to muffle the sound, and then returning to her bedroom to shoot her at close range. Initially, he gave conflicting accounts of what had transpired, but eventually admitted his involvement to investigators and his father.
Following his confession, Shawn Willis was charged with first-degree murder and held at the Anderson County Jail on a $1 million bond.
