Mya Taylor, an 18-year-old African American female, was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 2, 2020. Just days away from her graduation from Hillcrest High School, Mya was with two friends at a McDonald's drive-thru in the early morning hours. Shortly after she and a male friend swapped seats inside the vehicle, a silver-gray sedan pulled alongside them and occupants opened fire.
Both Taylor and her 19-year-old male companion were struck by the gunfire.
Taylor succumbed to her injuries, while her friend was treated at a hospital for non-critical wounds and later released. Her family believes she was not the intended target, suggesting that the tinted windows of the car she was in would have prevented the shooters from knowing she had moved to the front seat. Her sister, Brianne Sweat, expressed her belief that Mya was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.
The Memphis Police Department investigated the homicide and released surveillance photos of a suspect and the silver-gray four-door sedan used in the commission of the crime. Despite these efforts and pleas to the public for information, no arrests have been made in connection with Mya Taylor's murder. The case remains unsolved, and investigators have not determined the exact number of suspects involved in the shooting.
