On a summer evening in Millington, Tennessee, a violent encounter cut short the life of 38-year-old Larry House. The incident unfolded around 5 p.m. on June 5, 2020, inside a vehicle parked in the 6200 block of Martinwest Drive, just south of Navy Road. When officers from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene, they discovered House in the street, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Investigators determined that House and another man, a 27-year-old, were sitting in the parked car with a third individual, Orlando Phillips. An argument reportedly erupted, leading Phillips to become enraged. He then allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and opened fire on the other two men. The second victim sustained six gunshot wounds and was transported to a fire station on Navy Road by a private vehicle before being taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.
Shortly after the shooting, authorities located and arrested 40-year-old Orlando Phillips in the vicinity of the crime scene. A grand jury later indicted Phillips on charges of second-degree murder for the death of Larry House. He also faced charges of attempted second-degree murder in connection with the injuries sustained by the second victim, as well as a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The case was assigned to the District Attorney's Special Prosecution Unit 7, which focuses on prosecuting repeat felony offenders and seeks maximum sentencing.
