In the late summer of 2020, the community of Brownsville, Tennessee, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of 24-year-old Chelsey Renee Morris. A white female, Chelsey was shot and killed on the night of August 24th in what authorities have described as an attempted robbery. The incident unfolded on East Main Street, where Morris and a male companion, Bruce Willis of Oklahoma, were discovered inside a vehicle with critical injuries. While Willis was transported to a Memphis hospital for treatment, Morris tragically died at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the identification of two suspects. The following day, Tavares Ray and Wylie Ligon III were taken into custody. Both men were charged with a string of serious offenses, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and the employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. The motive behind the violent encounter was believed to be a narcotics transaction that escalated into an attempted robbery.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, one of the accused, Wylie Ligon III, entered a guilty plea for his role in the death of Chelsey Morris and the attempted murder of Bruce Willis. He was sentenced to a total of 55 years in prison. This sentence was comprised of 35 years for second-degree murder and a consecutive 20-year sentence for attempted first-degree murder. The case against the second suspect, Tavares Ray, was scheduled to proceed in court, continuing the quest for justice for Chelsey Morris and her loved ones.
