In the winter of 2021, the life of a promising Jackson, Tennessee teenager was tragically cut short. Fifteen-year-old Asia Breonna Woods, a Black female known for being a bright honors student, was killed on February 6th. On that day, a violent sequence of events unfolded, involving a shooting and a car chase that concluded near Volunteer Drive. When the chaos subsided, Asia was discovered deceased in the backseat of a vehicle.
The investigation into her death involved a multi-agency effort, with the Jackson Police Department, Humboldt Police Department, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI all contributing. While authorities have not officially confirmed if the incident was gang-related, it was reported that Asia had been on probation for breaking into cars and was allegedly involved with a gang. Her father, Terrance Woods, later expressed his profound grief and frustration, stating he had been aware of the dangerous path she was on and had tried unsuccessfully to steer her away from it.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an arrest was made in connection with Asia's death. Edtric Devon Rutherford was taken into custody and faced serious charges, including two counts of felony murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
