Ricky Earl Grayson, a 65-year-old White/Caucasian man from Memphis, Tennessee, was killed on July 10, 2021, in a late-morning burst of gunfire that turned an ordinary stop on Lamar Avenue into a scene of panic and loss. Police were called to the 4000 block of Lamar, in the Parkway Village area, where two people had been shot. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was rushed to Regional One Hospital in critical condition as investigators tried to piece together what had happened and why.
According to the police affidavit described in local reporting, the violence began as a robbery just outside King’s Liquors. A man leaving the store told investigators that an armed stranger confronted him and demanded his keys and wallet, using a profanity-laced threat. Even after the victim handed everything over, he said he was shot anyway and ran, wounded, trying to get away. Inside the store, the clerk—identified in the same report as Ricky Grayson—heard the shots and moved toward the front, gun in hand, as if responding on instinct to protect the storefront and the people around him.
The affidavit account continues with a grim, close-range exchange: video from the business reportedly showed the suspect shooting Grayson, knocking him to the ground. From the pavement, Grayson was still able to return fire. The suspect, though, remained on him—standing over him and shooting again—before taking Grayson’s wallet and the gun he had carried to the door. Then the suspect fled in a silver Ford Expedition that investigators said had been stolen from the scene, leaving behind a lifeless victim and a second person fighting to survive.
Hours later, police said the escape unraveled. Officers responding to a report of a possible DUI at a Walgreens in the 4600 block of Summer Avenue found the same Expedition, damaged, behind the business. Inside, they found Jonathan Anguiano slumped over the steering wheel and bleeding from a knee injury. During a search, officers reported finding guns, ammunition, and cash, and Anguiano was taken into custody.
Memphis Police publicly identified Anguiano—18 at the time—as the suspect and announced charges that included first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault, with local reporting also describing two counts of especially aggravated robbery. Authorities described the arrest as directly connected to the fatal shooting on Lamar.
