Andre' Thomas Smith, a 17-year-old Black male, died on August 31, 2021, following a violent encounter in the Riverside neighborhood of South Memphis. An argument escalated into a physical confrontation between Smith and another teenager, Javon Lee White, who was also 17 at the time.
According to witness accounts, the altercation began with a verbal dispute that quickly turned physical. Smith reportedly knocked White to the ground. As White got back on his feet, he allegedly produced a firearm and shot Smith in the stomach area. The single gunshot proved to be fatal. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Smith was rushed to Regional One Medical Center in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Memphis Police Department launched an investigation that swiftly led to a suspect. Javon Lee White was taken into custody and subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Andre' Thomas Smith. The Shelby County District Attorney's Office proceeded to indict White on the charge. He was then held at the Shelby County Jail East as he awaited trial for his alleged role in the fatal shooting.
