Do you know who murdered Kenneth Baxter in 2007? On the evening of Friday, July 6, 2007, Kenneth Baxter, a 43-year-old man, finished his shift at the Hilton Garden Inn in the Towne Centre Mall in Southaven, Mississippi. He left his workplace around 8:30 p.m. to begin his usual 1.5-mile walk home to his apartment on Airways Boulevard. Tragically, he would not make it home that night.
Approximately fifteen minutes after leaving work, as he was walking south across the Horn Lake Creek Bridge on Airways Boulevard, Baxter was struck by a
southbound vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and fled the scene, leaving him critically injured. Emergency services responded to a call at 8:48 p.m. regarding a pedestrian being hit by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they identified the victim as Kenneth Baxter. He died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the collision.
The case remains an unsolved hit-and-run. Initially, evidence from the scene suggested the vehicle involved was a red or maroon 1993 to 1995 Mercury Villager or Nissan Quest. However, new information that emerged in June 2011 led investigators to believe the suspect vehicle was a 1998 gold Nissan Quest. Despite this updated information, no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Kenneth Baxter, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have expressed that Airways Boulevard is a heavily traveled road, especially on a summer weekend, and believe it is likely that other drivers may have witnessed something that could be crucial to solving the case. A reward for information leading to an arrest has been offered by the City of Southaven, DeSoto County Crime Stoppers, the Baxter family, and a local church.
