In the afternoon hours of October 9, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the ordinary rhythm of a busy Memphis intersection near the international airport. Donquez Driver, a 21-year-old African American male, was a passenger in a vehicle when another car pulled alongside at a stoplight on Boeingshire Road and Shelby Drive. In a sudden act of violence, a man leaned out of the driver's seat of the adjacent car and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle carrying Driver.
The young man was
struck six times and succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the shooting. The driver of the car, his 59-year-old aunt, was also wounded in the attack, struck in the back by a bullet. She survived but required several surgeries to address her injuries. The violent encounter, captured on surveillance video, provided investigators with crucial evidence that would quickly lead them to a suspect.
Within two days of the fatal shooting, authorities apprehended Jalen Hill, then 22 years old, in connection with the incident. Based on the evidence gathered, including the video footage, a Shelby County Grand Jury later indicted Hill on serious charges. These charges included first-degree murder for the death of Donquez Driver, attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by his aunt, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. Following his indictment, Hill was held without bond at the Shelby County Jail as he awaited legal proceedings for his alleged role in the tragic and senseless death of Donquez Driver.
