In the late autumn of 2021, the community of Humboldt, Tennessee, was shaken by a burst of violence that claimed the life of 21-year-old Justin Kevon Pankey. On the evening of November 30th, what should have been a routine high school basketball game between Humboldt High School and North Side High School became the scene of a tragedy. It was around 8:20 p.m. when shots rang out, creating chaos and panic among the attendees. When the pandemonium subsided, Pankey, a former student and celebrated basketball player of Humboldt High, was found suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a single suspect: 18-year-old Jadon Davon Hardiman of Jackson, Tennessee. Authorities were able to identify him using video surveillance from the school. The day after the fatal shooting, on December 1st, Hardiman turned himself in to the police. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Pankey's death, as well as attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by two other individuals in the incident. Further charges included tampering with evidence and carrying a weapon on school property.
In the wake of the shooting, it was revealed that the altercation was between two adults and that no current students of Humboldt High were involved or injured. Investigators believe that Hardiman and the victims were acquainted, though a specific motive for the shooting was not publicly released. It was stated, however, that the two surviving victims were likely in the wrong place at the wrong time. In December 2021, Hardiman entered a plea of not guilty to the charges brought against him. The case against him grew more severe when one of the other victims, 18-year-old Xavier Clifton, died from his injuries in March 2022. This led to an additional charge of first-degree murder being filed against Hardiman, who was being held without bond.
