In the quiet community of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, a prelude to tragedy began on the night of March 17, 2022, at the home of the Easterly family. A man, later identified as 57-year-old Tony Davenport, allegedly forced his way into the residence on Grouse Court while armed with a rifle. Inside were Gidget Easterly, her husband Corey Hillsman, and her 24-year-old son, Jacob Conrad Lewis.
An altercation ensued, and Jacob reportedly intervened, physically confronting the intruder to protect his mother and stepfather. During this initial home invasion, a firearm was discharged, and one resident sustained a minor injury not caused by a gunshot. Jacob managed to remove the man from the home, and despite the violent encounter, the family was initially reluctant to provide many details to the police who were called to the scene by a neighbor.
The following morning, on March 18, 2022, the situation escalated with fatal consequences. Davenport returned to the residence around 11:30 a.m. and opened fire on the family. Jacob Lewis was shot and died at the scene. His mother and stepfather, Gidget Easterly and Corey Hillsman, also suffered critical gunshot wounds but ultimately survived the attack. In the hours leading up to the shooting, Jacob had apparently posted on social media about the previous night's events, detailing how he had defended his family from an armed man who had kicked in their door.
Following the shooting, law enforcement initiated a manhunt for Tony Davenport, putting out a BOLO for him and his vehicle. He was later located at his own residence on King Arthur Court, not far from the scene of the crime. SWAT members were called in to negotiate with Davenport, who eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for the death of Jacob Lewis and two counts of attempted murder for the shootings of Gidget Easterly and Corey Hillsman. It was also revealed that Davenport had a prior criminal history, including a previous charge for second-degree murder in 2003.
The case against Tony Davenport proceeded to trial in Cumberland County. On April 11, 2024, a jury found him guilty of reckless homicide in the death of Jacob Lewis. He was also convicted of the attempted second-degree murder of Corey Hillsman and attempted voluntary manslaughter for the shooting of Florence 'Gidget' Easterly. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for May 22, 2024, to determine the legal consequences for the violent acts that ended one young man's life and forever altered the lives of his family.
