In the late evening of August 13, 2022, a dispute over money in the Raleigh area of Memphis, Tennessee, tragically escalated, leading to the death of 60-year-old Dr. Yvonne Nelson. A respected community activist and educator, Nelson was a prominent figure in the Whitehaven community for over two decades, known for her relentless advocacy on various local issues.
Surveillance footage from a nearby convenience store captured the moments leading up to the fatal incident.
The video showed Nelson in a tense conversation with another woman, later identified as Tifanee Wright. The interaction moved off-camera, at which point witnesses reported hearing gunfire. Nelson was found at the scene on Yale Road, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The assailant fled in Nelson's late-model Infiniti.
Memphis Police quickly released images from the surveillance video to the public, seeking help in identifying the person of interest. Several tips from CrimeStoppers led investigators to 33-year-old Tifanee Wright. A warrant for her arrest on charges of second-degree murder was issued on August 16, 2022.
On August 23, 2022, U.S. Marshals apprehended Wright at a residence on Stoneway Lane in Memphis. Investigators found the front door barricaded with a couch, but they were able to communicate with Wright, who surrendered without incident. She was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Dr. Nelson's death. Wright was later released on a $25,000 bond in September 2022. She was arraigned on June 30, 2023, and court records indicate that subsequent hearings have been repeatedly reset, with the case ongoing.
