In the late summer of 2022, the life of 35-year-old Eugene Keefer was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. On September 25, 2022, Keefer was fatally shot near the Memphis airport in an encounter that was captured on surveillance video. The footage revealed a harrowing sequence of events in which Keefer was approached by three males. One of the men, later identified as Demonte Isom, brandished a firearm and pushed Keefer.
Despite Keefer showing no signs of aggression or retaliation, the situation escalated. Another individual accompanying Isom opened the passenger door of Keefer's vehicle. As Keefer leaned into the driver's side to speak with that person, Isom fired his weapon, shooting Keefer four times.
Following the shooting, Isom was seen jogging away from the scene and spitting in Keefer's direction as he lay dying. His callous actions did not end there. A witness testified that Isom later entered a vehicle and threatened another occupant, warning her to 'shut up or he would shoot her too.' The investigation into Keefer's death was aided by the crucial surveillance footage and the testimony of two eyewitnesses who confirmed that Isom was the shooter.
The legal process that followed brought some measure of justice for Eugene Keefer. In October 2024, a jury found Demonte Isom guilty of first-degree murder in the fatal shooting. The trial included the presentation of the surveillance video and witness testimony, which proved compelling to the jury. After just one hour of deliberation, they returned a guilty verdict. Isom's sentencing was scheduled to take place at a later date.
