In the early evening of October 9, 2022, a dispute that had been simmering erupted into deadly violence at Parkwood Park in North Nashville, claiming the lives of two brothers. KeiAnthony Sauntez Newbell, a 17-year-old African American male, and his 23-year-old brother, Quinatarius Newbell, were near the entrance of the park, which was close to their home, when gunfire rang out around 7 p.m.
Responding to the reports of the shooting, Metro Nashville Police officers arrived to find both brothers deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the double homicide pointed to a lingering conflict as the motive behind the tragic event. For months, detectives pursued leads in the case. In April 2023, a significant development occurred when authorities charged 18-year-old Amarion Franklin with the murders of both KeiAnthony and Quinatarius Newbell. At the time of the shooting, Franklin was 17 years old, and as a result, he is being charged in Juvenile Court.
While the arrest of Franklin marked a crucial step towards justice for the Newbell family, law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation is not over. Metro police have suggested that they anticipate making more arrests in connection with the fatal shooting. The community continues to mourn the loss of the two young brothers as the legal process against the initial suspect moves forward and the search for others involved continues.
