In a tragic incident in Nashville, Tennessee, 8-year-old Phillipe Woodard, a male child, passed away on Saturday, September 14, 2024. The young boy's death was the result of what authorities have described as an apparent accidental shooting that occurred inside his grandmother's home on North 2nd Street.
On the evening of the incident, Phillipe was reportedly left at his grandmother's residence with his 10-year-old brother and a 16-year-old family friend, without adult supervision.
Preliminary investigations suggest that Phillipe began playing with a loaded shotgun that was present in the home. The 16-year-old who was in the house at the time reported to authorities that he was asleep and awoke to the sound of a gunshot. Upon waking, he discovered what had happened and ran to a neighbor's house for help. Emergency services were called, and Phillipe was transported to Vanderbilt Pediatrics, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
In the wake of the young boy's death, the Nashville school community mourned the loss of a student who was described by his teachers as a child with a big smile and an eagerness to learn. He was a second-grade student at Schwab Elementary School and had recently been accepted into the gifted program.
The investigation into the circumstances of the shooting led to the arrest of Phillipe's grandmother, Gracie Patton Mimms, who was 48 years old at the time. Authorities alleged that she had left the children unsupervised to spend time with friends, knowing that a loaded shotgun was easily accessible in the home. As a result, Mimms was charged with criminal homicide and aggravated child neglect in connection with her grandson's death. The case is set to be staffed with the District Attorney's Office upon the completion of the ongoing investigation.
