In the Binghampton neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, on the evening of October 14, 2022, the life of Nepoleon Brooks, a 35-year-old African American man, was tragically cut short. At approximately 9:10 p.m. at the Chickasaw Place Apartments on Mimosa Avenue, Brooks was struck by a fatal gunshot to his lower back. Despite the immediate response of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Memphis Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led them to identify 23-year-old Katron Crawford as the primary suspect in the shooting. Investigators utilized surveillance footage which captured a man, later identified as Crawford, wearing a distinctive Tommy Hilfiger hoodie and leaving the scene in a Mitsubishi Outlander. This crucial piece of evidence proved instrumental in the progression of the case.
Following the identification of the suspect, law enforcement officials executed a search warrant. During the search, they discovered a hoodie that matched the one worn by the individual in the surveillance video. Subsequently, Katron Crawford was taken into custody and formally charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Nepoleon Brooks.
