A mail carrier and another man discovered her body in the yard of her Clay County home on Lake View Drive, the victim of a single gunshot wound. Just months earlier, in September 2022, Julie's estranged husband, Michael Harding, had been reported missing. His body was later found in a vacant house in neighboring Cumberland County, Kentucky, the victim of multiple gunshot wounds. His death was immediately treated as a homicide, launching an investigation that would soon draw a line directly back to his wife. The couple had purchased the Celina home together with plans to relocate from California, but they became estranged, with Michael moving to Tennessee while Julie remained in Sacramento.
The investigation into Michael's murder led authorities to 60-year-old Thomas Francis O'Donnell of Napa, California. He was arrested at the Sacramento International Airport on December 8, 2022, and charged with Michael Harding's murder. Court documents later revealed a suspected murder-for-hire plot, alleging that Julie Harding had conspired with O'Donnell to kill her husband. Prosecutors pointed to 194 phone calls between Julie and O'Donnell in the three months leading up to the murder and several large cash withdrawals Julie had made from the couple's joint bank accounts.
The day after O'Donnell's arrest, and just one day before her own death, Julie Harding was arrested in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The charges were for criminal trespassing and stalking at the home of a woman who was reportedly Michael Harding's new girlfriend. Julie was released from jail, but the turmoil of her life appeared to have reached a breaking point.
