Game Officer L. Seeley Houk, a dedicated officer of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, was fatally shot on March 2, 1906, in Hillsville, Pennsylvania. He was issuing game violation citations to a group of immigrants when he was attacked. The assailant, who was the leader of an organized crime ring known as the Black Hand Society, shot Houk and then weighted his body down before submerging it in the Mahoning River. Houk's body was discovered over a month later when the water level dropped.
