On January 20, 2024, 35-year-old William Grover Carter was fatally shot during a robbery in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Carter had been visiting a friend's residence on Powell Street and stepped outside to retrieve an item from his vehicle. As he walked along the first block of West Wood Street, he was confronted by three men who exited a gray Toyota RAV-4. The assailants robbed Carter at gunpoint, and one of them shot him before fleeing the scene in the waiting vehicle.
Later that night, around 3 a.m., Norristown police discovered the gray Toyota RAV-4 engulfed in flames at the intersection of Willow and Roberts streets. Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen from Cheltenham on December 21, 2023.
Authorities identified and apprehended several suspects in connection with Carter's murder. Eighteen-year-old Damon Brantley Jr. of Norristown, identified as the shooter, along with 29-year-old Daquan Allen of Norristown and 28-year-old Jerry Butler of Philadelphia, were arrested in upstate New York on January 31, 2024. They faced charges including first-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy.
Further investigation led to the arrest of Carter's girlfriend, Katherine Emel, who was charged with second-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy. Authorities alleged that Emel conspired with Brantley, Allen, and Butler to orchestrate the robbery and murder of Carter.
Carter's death deeply affected his family and the Norristown community. He was remembered as a dedicated father of two who worked diligently to support his family. His tragic passing marked the third loss for his family in a short period, following the recent deaths of his brother and sister.
