On a November morning in 1948, the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, was shattered by an outburst of violence that would come to be known as the Market Street Massacre. Among the victims of this tragic event was Aiken Johnson, a 49-year-old man who lost his life in the deadly rampage. The perpetrator was Melvin Collins, a 38-year-old migrant worker with a history of violent tendencies.
The morning of November 6th began with an unsettling act.
Collins, from his second-floor room on Market Street, dropped a dime to a group of men below, telling them to call the police. When one of the men picked it up, Collins opened fire with a. 22 caliber rifle, killing his first victim instantly. This initial act of violence quickly escalated as Collins continued to fire indiscriminately at anyone in his line of sight. Panic and chaos erupted in the streets as residents and passersby scrambled for cover.
The sound of gunfire drew the attention of many, including Chester's first Black police detective, Ellery Purnsley. As Detective Purnsley courageously attempted to intervene, he was fatally shot by Collins. The gunman's relentless assault continued, claiming the lives of several others who were either trying to help the fallen or simply caught in the tragic unfolding of events. The violence lasted for over an hour, a harrowing period during which Collins fired upon people in the street and in nearby buildings.
A large contingent of law enforcement, numbering nearly eighty officers, descended upon the scene. They engaged in a firefight with Collins, launching tear gas into his room in an attempt to subdue him. As officers prepared to breach his barricaded door, a final gunshot was heard from within. When police finally gained entry, they found Melvin Collins deceased, having taken his own life. The motive for his deadly rampage remains unclear, though accounts from those who knew him described a man with a 'hot temper' and a history of mental instability. The 'Market Street Massacre' left a lasting scar on the community of Chester, a somber reminder of a day when eight innocent lives were tragically cut short.
