John David Watson, a 14-year-old boy from Dunbar Township, Pennsylvania, tragically died on May 2, 1974. Watson, who was white, left his home on his bicycle that evening to buy cigarettes for his mother at a nearby motel. He never returned home, and his body was discovered the next morning on a neighbor's property with a gunshot wound to the back of his head.
The case remained unsolved for decades until 2009, when new forensic tests were conducted on a coat belonging to Joseph Leos,
Watson's childhood friend. These tests revealed gunpowder residue on the coat, leading to Leos' arrest in 2015. Leos, who was 17 at the time of Watson's death, was charged with homicide. However, the charges were later dismissed due to inconclusive evidence.
Despite the dismissal, the case continues to be a point of interest for Pennsylvania State Police, who have offered a $5,000 reward for any information related to Watson's death. Watson's family has expressed their heartbreak over the lack of closure and justice for their loved one.
The investigation into Watson's death remains open, and the search for answers continues to this day.
