Patrolman Richard Gordon Janczewski, aged 23, was shot and killed on May 27, 1986, while investigating a suspicious vehicle parked in the woods near the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Airport in Avoca Borough, Pennsylvania. As he approached the vehicle, a man emerged from the woods and was asked for identification by Patrolman Janczewski.
