On a Friday evening, September 22, 1995, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the life of a dedicated police officer, Sergeant James Henry 'Rip' Taylor, Jr., was tragically cut short. The 42-year-old male was off-duty when he and his daughter came across a group of young men spraying graffiti at the intersection of Vassar and Grotto Streets in the Lemington neighborhood. A confrontation ensued, and in the struggle that followed, Sergeant Taylor was fatally shot with his own service weapon. He had served with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for 15 years and was survived by his wife and four children.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the investigation quickly focused on a primary suspect. Four days later, 17-year-old Tyrek Booker surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently charged in connection with the death of Sergeant Taylor. Booker faced legal proceedings for his role in the fatal altercation.
At his trial, Tyrek Booker claimed that he had acted in self-defense. Ultimately, he was not convicted of murder but was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter. The court sentenced him to serve a prison term of five to ten years for the killing of Sergeant Taylor. Following the completion of his sentence, Booker was released. However, years later, in December of 2018, he was arrested again on unrelated charges, including possession of a controlled substance and illegal possession of a firearm.
