Karriem Washington's murder led authorities to the 'Boyle Street Boys,' a violent cocaine manufacturing and distribution enterprise that operated in the Highland Gardens neighborhood of Chester. The gang was known for using extreme violence to control their turf and intimidate the community. Washington's murder was a result of escalating tensions and disagreements with the group. Due to the climate of fear created by the gang, many witnesses to the shooting were initially afraid to cooperate with the police.
A major federal investigation eventually dismantled the 'Boyle Street Boys.' In a sweeping 44-count indictment, several members of the gang were charged with racketeering, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, and four murders, including that of Karriem Washington. The main suspects in Washington's death were identified as Andre Cooper, who was the alleged triggerman, and brothers Vincent and Jamain Williams. The prosecution presented a harrowing account of the murder, stating that Cooper had shot Washington nearly a dozen times, from head to toe.
The trial of Andre Cooper, Vincent Williams, and Jamain Williams began in January 2006 and lasted for five and a half months. The federal government sought the death penalty for the defendants. A special verdict form from the trial revealed that the jury found that Cooper had committed the murder after substantial planning and premeditation. While spared the death penalty, Andre Cooper was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison. His co-defendants, the Williams brothers, were also convicted for their roles in the gang's violent activities and received lengthy prison sentences.
