Michael Douglas Beverly, a 36-year-old male of African American ethnicity, was a Corporal in the Chester City Police Department in Chester, Pennsylvania. On October 16, 2001, while on patrol near 10th and Ward Streets, he was shot and killed by two suspects. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm, and Beverly was fatally shot multiple times with a .44-caliber handgun.
The suspects were apprehended the following morning, and one of them, Maurice Day, was later convicted of murder and
sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on March 2, 2004. Beverly, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, had served with the Chester Police Department for 11 years and was well-respected by his colleagues and community. He is survived by his wife and five children.
The case drew significant attention due to Beverly's dedication to mentoring youth in the community and his efforts to combat gang violence in the Highland Gardens neighborhood, which was notorious for drug trafficking and gang-related activities.
