On September 2, 2009, Kymeen Damone Bennett, a 23-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically killed in Chester, Pennsylvania. Bennett was outside in the 3100 block of West 10th Street, engaged in a conversation with another man, when they were suddenly caught in a barrage of bullets from multiple firearms. He was struck in the head during the assault and was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A father of three, Bennett was remembered by his loved ones as a loving individual with a great sense of humor who cared deeply for his family.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to identify and apprehend two suspects. Dennis Kenneth Madison, 26, of Chester, and Kevin A. Martin, 25, of Newark, Delaware, were arrested in connection with Bennett's death. Both men later pleaded guilty to charges of third-degree murder and conspiracy. As a result of their pleas, Madison was sentenced to 17½ to 40 years in prison, while Martin received a sentence of 25 to 50 years.
During the sentencing, Judge Barry Dozor described the fatal shooting as a 'frightening and awful act of terror.' The emotional toll on Kymeen Bennett's family was evident during the court proceedings, where they expressed their profound grief and anger over their loss. In addition to the two men who were convicted, a third individual, Amir Lamar Tucker, 25, of Chester, was named as a suspect who remained under investigation for his potential involvement in the shooting. The case highlighted the devastating impact of gun violence on the community and the complexities law enforcement faced, particularly when witnesses were hesitant to come forward and testify.
