On January 17, 2013, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, 42-year-old Leroy Smith, an African American male, was fatally shot multiple times. The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. when a patrol officer responded to gunshots in the 100 block of Scott Street. Upon arrival, the officer discovered Leroy Smith's body on the sidewalk outside a bar, later identified as Don Kasper’s Watering Hole.
Luzerne County Acting Coroner William Lisman pronounced him dead at the scene at 4:15 a.m.
In the same incident, 20-year-old Jamel Martin, also an African American male, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries approximately 12 hours later. A third individual was also wounded but was expected to recover.
Authorities ruled Leroy Smith's death a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds. Despite investigations, the case remains unsolved, with no arrests made or suspects identified in connection to the shooting. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and law enforcement continues to seek information to bring those responsible to justice.
