Ruby Nell Thomas, a 57-year-old woman, tragically lost her life on August 23, 2014, in Philadelphia, PA. She was visiting her friend Dollie Evans, 67, at her home on the 4700 block of Vista Street in the Holmesburg section of the city. Both women were found shot execution-style in the home. Thomas' body was discovered in the living room with a cord around her neck and a gunshot wound to the head.
Evans' body was found in an upstairs bedroom, also shot in the head.
The suspect, James Mears, 25, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder, robbery, and other related offenses. Mears allegedly knew both Evans and Thomas and had been staying with them for a couple of months. According to investigators, Mears' motive was robbery, and he stole $500 from Evans before shooting her in the head. He then allegedly tried to strangle Thomas before shooting her as well.
Mears was taken into custody a few days after the murders and is awaiting arraignment. The investigation revealed that Mears had a criminal record and had recently been released from prison. The community continues to mourn the loss of Thomas and Evans, who were known for their kindness and willingness to help others.
